The British 22 year old striker seemingly had the world at his feet. The striker last season was scoring goals for fun at West Brom, with his influence being a key reason why the Baggies remained in the Premier League.
After the conclusion of the 2014/15 season, many big teams were rumored to be in the hunt for his signature. Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs were all discussed, and it was the latter which perused the player the strongest. Tottenham clearly enticed the young player, as he was obviously looking for a move away when the transfer window opened. West Brom were very clear and open with what it would take to sign the forward. Albion gave him a valuation of £25 million, and set out that anything less than that for their star player would be rejected.
This is where the saga gets unsavory. Tottenham bid in total four times to try and bring Berahino to the club, twice on the final day of the window. Representatives from Spurs say they received ‘positive signs’ even after their first bid was rejected, therefore did not hesitate to keep pressing to sign the striker. The West Brom Chairman however, had a completely different perspective on how the situation was handled. Jeremy Peace stated that
“We have a key player who has been very unsettled by antics which were designed to get him out of our club cheaply.”
The statement goes on to slam Tottenham for their conduct and for leaving West Brom to clean up the damage caused by the failed transfer.
This however was not controversial at all, when it’s compared to what Berahino himself had to say. An hour before the deadline the 22 year old was clearly extremely annoyed with not getting his move away, so much so he took to Twitter to vent his frustration. Below is the tweet he sent out, threatening strike action.
The tweet argues that he has been tweeted so poorly by West Brom, that he will never play for Jeremy Peace. This has sent shock waves across the footballing world, with fans all wondering what the future will hold for Saido Berahino. Well one thing is for sure, his decision to tweet his frustration has not helped his case at all. The detrimental effect seems lost on Berahino; as he has not deleted the tweet, despite the global impact it has caused. All pundits seem to be agreed in the belief that the actions were at best naive, and at worst stupid.
My opinion is the same as that of the current Southend boss, Phil Brown. This is that his public display will put off potential clubs in the future. If he can refuse to play for West Brom why would a team like Spurs sign him and risk the same fate? If he is to attract the top teams his behaviour in the public eye needs to change. Berahino could do with looking to players like John Stones and David De Gea who, despite not being given their desired moves, have acted calmly rather than cause a media storm.
This story is far from over but hopefully it will blow over quickly for Berahino. He is an extremely promising and talented player and hopefully, with good management, he can fulfill his potential. What do you think of the Berahino story? Will he be able to restore his reputation? Will he play for West Brom again? Comment below your thoughts and thank you for reading!
